A Dream Beyond One's Self
For many first generation students, attending college not only accomplishes their dream but their families' dreams as well. A large majority of the families of these students escaped war, famine, political disruption and crime, risking everything so that their children could succeed and have greater opportunities than they did. It’s this selflessness that inspires and motivates many first generation students. These students defy the odds by shattering generations of stigmas and stereotypes. They are a testament of strength and perseverance, serving as a role model to themselves, their families and their communities.
This exhibition is made possible by "A Peace of My Mind" — a multimedia arts project. Their studio at the University of Minnesota asks first generation students, “What will graduating from college mean to you, your family, and/or your community?”
Join us on November 8th for the reception at the 2nd Floor Gallery. Food and refreshments will be provided. Attendees will be invited to participate in a Dream Board activity.
