March 14 - April 21; Reception: March 14, 6-8:30pm Coffman Memorial Union, Coffman Art Gallery

This exhibit brings together two previous photographic essays by Catalan photographer Espe Pons: Sota la llum del mar (Under the Light of the Sea) - 2019 and Tierra (Earth) - 2023. Both are part of a long-term research/art project by the artist though which she explores personal memory and traces collective memory in Spain, while working to dignify the victims of the mass violence imposed throughout the country by the fascist military regime of Francisco Franco (1939-1975) after the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939).

Join us for an opening reception March 14 from 6-8:30 PM in the Coffman Art Gallery.

In partnership with the Spanish and Portuguese Studies Department, the reception will include an artist’s talk by Espe Pons with focus on the intersection of Art, Trauma and Human rights.

Sponsoring entities include the IAS Interdisciplinary Collaborative Research Project "Memory, Trauma, and Human Rights at the Crossroads of Art and Science," the College of Liberal Arts (Interdisciplinary Collaborative Workshop), and the Institute for Advanced Study. The artist will be speaking in Spanish, with simultaneous English translation.
