Selections of Student Activism at the University of Minnesota — A partnership with the History Department

Explore the history of student activism at the University of Minnesota and across the country through HIST 3849 students' written materials and imagery. All are invited to the opening reception on April 28 from 1:30 to 3:00 PM in the West Bank Skyway.

The course — HIST 3849: "The Histories of Student Activism in the United States" — explores the many histories of student activism, instances when students have taken part in global social movements, as well as when they’ve focused on their own institutions to demand change from universities. Class activities and assignments have students explore questions of activism; examine how students debate ethics and make decisions about how to engage with the broader body politic; and reflect on the actions of their direct historical counterparts. The course focuses on the United States and uses University of Minnesota student history for experiential learning and specific case studies.

This course was co-taught by:
Yalile Suriel, Assistant Professor of Universities and Power, Department of History
Ellen Holt-Werle Institutional Archivist, University Archives
