The West Bank Brewing Association's mission is to promote responsible beer culture; educate and inform our membership about beer appreciation, beer styles, beer policy and legislation, and the brewing process on a small scale; among graduate students at the University of Minnesota.
Group's principal activities, events, or programs:
• Periodic guest speakers from the brewing and policy communities
• Monthly Tasting and appreciation meetings with beer policy updates
• Monthly Homebrewing workshops
• Brewing for local charity and non-profit events
How this group's activities benefit the University community:
We promote a responsible drinking culture by focusing on process, technique, and appreciation. We expose people to a rewarding hobby and increase their knowledge of a millennia-old craft. We will examine the impacts of state and local beer policy on entrepreneurs and hobbyists, and will publish findings in an annual report. In addition, our beer will be served at local charity and nonprofit events and will help support good causes. Many of our meetings will be held at small businesses around the University, supporting local business in the University’s backyard.
How this group fits into its categories:
We are categorizing the West Bank Brewing Association as a Special Events group because: we are organizing and will host monthly brewing workshops and tasting and appreciation meetings, and periodic guest speaker events.
Special Interests and Hobbies-
The craft of brewing is a long-practiced household hobby. We will be a bridge for students to access the local brewing culture.
How to get involved with this group:
Members must be 21 years of age or older to participate in any events involving beer tasting. Appreciation meetings will be held on a consistent schedule at rotating, posted, locations. All events will be announced through a monthly newsletter sent out to a mailing list. The mailing list will be open to anyone and there will be an opportunity at meetings for people to add their contact information. Initial meetings and all guest speakers will be posted on the graduate student listserv. There will be no membership application.
