The Student Neighborhood Liaison's mission is to improve the livability of the neighborhoods near the U of M campus. We accomplish this by partnering with neighborhood organizations and residents to bridge the gap between students and their neighbors and create opportunities for all to be engaged in the neighborhood. Founded within the Student and Community Relations department at the U of M-Twin Cities, we primarily work with the three neighborhoods of SE Como, Marcy Holmes, and Prospect Park. Our goal is to build on the existing sense of community (friendly, vibrant, safe, and environmentally healthy) and strengthen it.
Group's principal activities, events, or programs:
In order to improve the neighborhood relations, our Student Neighborhood Liaison (SNL) program sponsors numerous community events for the neighborhoods surrounding the University of Minnesota where both students and homeowners live. Our biggest event is the Como Cookout in SE Como with free food, music, prizes and opportunity for neighbors to meet! We host the annual Ping-Pong Tourney, Community Clean Up events, and help with National Night Out Block Party events each August. Our strength for the program comes with partnering with community organizations like SE Como Improvement Association and the Marcy Holmes Neighborhood Association.
How this group's activities benefit the University community:
The Student Neighborhood Liaison program’s mission is to improve the livability of neighborhoods near the U of M campus. Therefore, we seek to benefit both the University and surrounding communities through relationship building and connecting students to housing and livability resources. Partnering with University Student Legal Services, we encourage students to know their rights as tenants and their legal responsibilities within their neighborhood. We also provide free events and resources to students who live in SE Como, Marcy Holmes and Prospect Park in order for them to become engaged in those neighborhoods.
How this group fits into its categories:
Housing is a central piece to our work as we seek student tenants living in the SE Como, Marcy Holmes or Prospect Park neighborhoods to improve livability issues regarding those neighborhoods. Student Neighborhood Liaisons are hired by the University of Minnesota to ensure these community relations are developed and improved. The SNL group works to develop student leadership through the SNL program as well as student tenant’s leadership through organizing trainings and neighborhood workshops. We seek student leaders who are interested in community organizing and relationship building to improve relations, livability issues and environmental quality of these neighborhoods.
How to get involved with this group:
We encourage students to volunteer with our program and become leaders within their neighborhood. We are facilitating the Fall "Meet-N-Greet" to talk with student renters who are moving into these residential neighborhoods and distribute resources for students to know their rights as renters and their responsibility as neighbors.
