About this Group

Group Description
The Minnesota Public Interest Research Group is a grass roots, student-directed, non-partisan organization that empowers and trains students and engages the community to take collective action in the public interest statewide.
Group's principal activities, events, or programs:
MPIRG Programs at the University of Minnesota MPIRG students selected Economic Justice, Gender and Sexuality Initiatives, Sustainability, and Democracy as this year's campaigns.
How this group's activities benefit the University community:
MPIRG provides a wide variety of benefits to the student body. Those who actively participate in the chapter, invest time and effort gain skills in communication, leadership, organization, policy, publicity, research methodology, and most importantly, in effectively identifying, organizing around, and alleviating a social injustice. This investment pays dividends both immediately and in years to come for the active MPIRG member, the campus and the broader community. MPIRG's priorities are three-fold, identifying and researching issues of public concern, developing student leaders to take on those issues, and creating positive social change.
How this group fits into its categories:
On February 13, 1971, MPIRG was incorporated as a 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization, which operates separately from the legal structure of the U of M. On July 1, 2006, MPIRG changed its tax status to become a 501 (c)(3) to better recognize our mission and activities. MPIRG remains strictly nonpartisan, and has never supported a candidate for any campus, local, state or federal office whether elected or appointed; nor has MPIRG ever excluded anyone from participation based on partisan affiliation. MPIRG seeks to engage and empower students to work towards meaningful change on issues of the public interest. The underlying principle
How to get involved with this group:
Anyone can be a member of MPIRG. We do a large recruitment drive at the start of each semester. We also continually do outreach about MPIRG and our events throughout the school year. We advertise with posters, flyers, chalking, panels on the bridge, events calendar (Daily, SUA, etc...), talking with classes, meeting with other groups and many other activities. During the school year we meet each Monday at 4:30 - this is posted across campus and through emails. Anyone can attend. All this information is also available at our website. Students can sign up to join the group.
