Why Student Groups?

Student groups...

  • build community and belonging on campus
  • foster lifelong friendships and human connections
  • allow students to take their academic experiences and knowledge outside of the classroom
  • act as a platform to explore hobbies and passions
  • serve the local and global community
  • develop critical leadership competencies and career skills.

Student groups are an integral part of the University of Minnesota. With over 1,000 student groups, there’s a group for everyone. If there’s one missing, any student at the U of M can start a group and build a new community on campus.

Starting a Group

There are over 1,000 student groups at the University of Minnesota. Before you start a new group, look to see if a similar group already exists. You can find student groups on GopherLink.

If you can’t find your student group, you can register a new group. Student groups new to campus must register with the Student Activities Office. New student groups may register between August 15 and May 15. For information on how to register, click here.
