This film confronts the culture of violence surrounding trans women of color. It is told through the voices of Laverne Cox and Cece McDonald.
Following the 7pm screening at Coffman Memorial Union, there will be a panel discussion consisting of Cece McDonald, Roxanne Anderson, and Quinn Villagomez. Come join the discussion and learn more about their life experiences.
Cece McDonald is an African American bi-trans woman and LGBTQ activist from Minneapolis who received national attention after going to prison for defending herself during a racist and transphobic attack. Since then, she has received support from transgender activist Laverne Cox, was included as a part of Advocate's "40 Under 40" list, and has been awarded the Bayard Rustin Civil Rights Award by the Harvey Milk LGBT Democrat.
Roxanne Anderson is a community activist who has been working for social justice in the LGBTQ community for more than 15 years. In 2013, Roxanne won OutFront Minnesota's Legacy Award, which honors an individual who has demonstrated long-term commitment to equality for LGBTQ Minnesotans. Roxanne was also involved with the Minneapolis Transgender Issues Workgroup, which raised awareness and support for a Minneapolis City Council resolution, making restroom access for transgender people easier and safer.
Quinn Villagomez a.k.a. SHIMMER - is a true Minnesotan, born and raised right here in the Twin Cities area. Quinn identifies as a Hispanic Woman of Color and a Transgender Woman. Quinn has definitely seen the struggles of being a Minority and faces the criticisms the LGBT Community & Transgender Women face in today's Society; this has not stopped Quinn from following her dreams and straying her from succeeding in her passions. Quinn was chosen as one of 5 Influential Women in the Twin Cities and walked on the Catwalk for Breast Cancer Awareness in the PRETTY IN PINK Benefit. Quinn also performed this past year in the RARE Productions Events - "Black, Borwn & Queer All Over" & Trans Jam 2014"
