University of Minnesota alumnus Reggie Spanier’s collage works began as a response to material waste inherent to framing artifacts. His works consist of frames and layers of acrylic made from rescued/up-cycled/dumpster dived materials from local framing businesses and museums. These frames are then populated with printed images sourced from magazines, archives, and stock photos. The result is a multi-plane optical illusion, which provides the viewer with an artificial and exaggerated depth of field.
The subjects of these works are inspired by the ecology of the materials and in the vein of ‘parody-collage,’ this series explores the industrialization of our food production systems, gender-politics, economy, and the propaganda of abundance.
