TIPS FOR NEW STUDENTS
Stay Connected&Use Your Time Wisely Once Classes
Start!
We want you to enjoy your first year at the University of
Minnesota. Be sure to get involved in as many campus activities as
your schedule allows. In addition, there are some additional tips for making
the most of your time on campus. Here are some suggestions:
- Stop
by the Commuter Connection in Coffman Memorial Union Room 236 and meet
people!
Play the online Ampersand game and learn about how student unions can help you meet people, find a job, or what to do on the weekends to make the most of your college experience.
- Need
to find your class or building?
Check out Campus Maps
to help you navigate your way around campus.
- Go to
your professor’s and TA’s office hours with questions—even if you know the
answers, you’ll get to know a bit about them and what to expect from the
course.
- Join/organize
a discussion group if you feel it will be a difficult course.
- Read
the Minnesota Daily for
updates on campus events –and go to them, student groups are always looking
for new participants.
- Become
familiar with all of the student
groups on campus - there are over 700!
- Apply
to become a Welcome Week Leader! Applications
will be available in late December.
- Join a
class, intramural sports team or sports club
- Attend
a Gopher athletic event.
- Hold
an on-campus job.
- Have
easy to grab&stash snacks for those days when you’re in a rush, they
come in handy!
- The
gaps between classes—use them! You’ll be amazed at how much you
can get done, whether it’s used for cramming a few more facts in or completing
some homework you got that day.
Feel free to stop into the Commuter Connection in Coffman Memorial
Union Room 236 for a convenient space.
- Bring
a compact lunch, it’ll save money and there are microwaves in Coffman Memorial Union if you need a
hot lunch. Don’t forget, the
Commuter Connection also has a microwave and refrigerator for you to use!
